“i’ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i’d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there’s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we’ve succeeded.

the must have status of joey negros -remixed with love series has been firmly cemented with both dj and home listening disco lovers since the release of the first two volumes. since the last release jn has been working hard on sourcing more disco multitrack tapes and producing new remixes while the zr team have been equally dedicated to clearing and licensing these new versions. the enduringly popular mtume/lucas produced phyllis hyman soul classic you know how to love me gets a new makeover that reworks the original elements into a more dramatic version with many peaks and troughs, stretching it out to over 10 minutes. even for those love the original this new mix gives a favourite song a fresh new perspective and reason to be played again. motown sounds philly style instrumental bad mouthin was an underground hit on dance floors in new york, london and chicago from the late 70s onwards. it was also famously sampled in bob sinclar s no 1 gym tonic. the original is a pretty dense, everything in all the way through style production, whereas the jn mix opens things up in a bit with more room for the individual parts to be heard. the end result is an extremely energetic bassline driven disco cut that works super well on the dancefloor.

smile for a while has recently moved to berlin and calls for jana falcon, a local, emerging house music producer . -falling (again boy)- is an intricate fusion of garage and house textures, it s a sultry, catchy tune with stunning spoken-word vocals and a bed of fuzzy beats that give it a really contemporary gloss. things then go off in another direction with the brilliantly named, -contemplation of inadequacy-. this one is crafted on another hypnotic tip, drawing the listener in with another bevy of atmospheric vocals and a bassline that s pure fire. in -petrias house- jana goes for a more upfront house sound. simmering piano keys lend this one a sun-soaked flourish, precisely the tonic for the fast-approaching summer. the release closes with a thoroughly banging remix by we play house man, dynamodyse. a tune that s thoroughly engaging and is sure to get your head in

after the big succes of hi tech booty, we searched for some really special guys out there to put hand on ahmets bomb. well here it is. a1 comes from maetrik which was a strong desire of ahmet and for sure an excellent choice. he totally brings in his own style while getting a little bit closer to the darkside of the track. a2 is a special collab between rainer, which we know from the last regular stock5 record together with cesare vs disorder and viudez, a mexican guy that seems to have a very nice influence to the production style. the vocal is very present but placed, arranged and transformed geniously. for sure a weapon! b1 is written by our special friend chris sylvester aka inxec. starting with a very housy groove, it falls quickly into a hypnotic mood that is unique in inxec productions. he really knows what the dancefloor requires and for this we are very happy to have him again in our release roster. b2 presents a very new and fresh artist called rico casazza. he interprets the track in a very detroit way, works verz little with the vocal but hits it very perfectly for the sense of the track. after this debut on our imprint you can be sure to hear more of this young guy in the next time!!!
